Starlight 03:07
From the constellations you came down to me Through the generations you came down to me Hello Starlight The darkness has become so clear A mountain from a shadow Now my wishes are so simple That I can always be there for you That I can always leave space for you That I can always love you That I can always see you From the constellations you came down to me Through the generations you came down to me Mother after mother till you came to be One after another till you came to me Forever over and over, forever on Until forever is over and stars are gone Mother after mother till you came to be One after another till you came to me Throwing out a line beyond what we can see Throwing out a line into eternity Hello Starlight The magnitude has been revealed A tide pool to an ocean Now my wishes are so simple That I can always be there for you That I can always leave space for you That I can always love you That I can always see you From the constellations you came down to me Through the generations you came down to me Mother after mother till you came to be One after another till you came to me Forever over and over, forever on Until forever is over and stars are gone Mother after mother till you came to be One after another till you came to me Oh Star, Oh Starlight

Eliza 03:29
Voices, strong as the trees Loud as the sea, wild and free Echoes hang in the air All I can hear surrounding me Eliza Oh Eliza When you were here, I was happy Softened the edge I was nursing I would have gone anywhere you would be High in a grand, gleaming palace Tucked in a tent by a cavern Down on the lake, where you whispered my name Now the quiet's like a blanket on the hills Underneath the stars so silent and so still There was something that you needed me to say When you have to ask it isn't quite the same Eliza Oh Eliza I saw a life full of wonder Safe from the night and the thunder But it seems safe doesn't make it for you Voices, strong as the trees Loud as the sea, wild and free Echoes hang in the air All I can hear surrounding me

Spooker 03:54
All the eyes, the eyes are watching No one's moving, no one's talking Stay away, away, away Don’t take a risk, it's a risk 'cause I know what you mean When you say what you don't On and off the water You hear the sirens call you down It feels like fate In a weak moment Trying to tighten up your mask You see my face I’m unwelcome But in the middle of the night You call my name We are not strangers I know I spook you it's because We are the same There's a time to watch, to gather There's a time, a time, a time to run And when you start to doubt yourself You're done, you're done, you're done 'cause I know what you'll do When you say what you won't On and off the water You hear the sirens call you down It feels like fate In a weak moment Trying to tighten up your mask You see my face I’m unwelcome But in the middle of the night You call my name We are not strangers I know I spook you it's because We are the same We’re not strangers We are the same

To Turn Away 02:40
You want to run fast But I don't want to I want to go back To what we're used to How can it be so easy To turn away To turn away To give up all the time we could have had together To give up all the wisdom gathered there To give up everything familiar You make it look so easy To turn away To turn away To turn away You never mind that The path is thorny I am the one scratched I wear the memory

Magic Hour 02:57
When the birds call out their secrets When the light finds a dark spot The world is passing on a message Channel it and work it out Oh I saw what I saw At magic hour By nightfall, by nightfall My faith had soured Day was done, I went to find them Throwing all the rest aside Conjuring a chance to capture Telling movements in their eyes I doubt, I doubt and I believe I hope, I hope and I concede It cycles through, pulls me in two I'm in two minds Oh I saw what I saw At magic hour By nightfall, by nightfall My faith had soured Can I trust? I don't know. Can I try? I will. Even if I never If I can never know the truth If I can never know the truth If I can never know the truth Try to live with the question

I saw her making shapes Flinging herself across the ground A thing I wouldn't do If anybody was around Sink a stake down Make a defense To act with an assurance That I don't feel inside myself Cause I see every face here Feel like they know the things I fear Bundled up in illusions They're so thin you'd see right through them And the edges are creeping All the secrets I'm not keeping But our job is to love when It's so easy to pass judgement A thought went through my mind Surfacing just as she left That you could live a life And know it wasn't for yourself Cause I see every face here Feel like they know the things I fear Bundled up in illusions They're so thin you'd see right through them And the edges are creeping All the secrets I'm not keeping But our job is to love when It's so easy to pass judgement

Every path is laid out to trace Even all the ones that were erased Seeking certainty, never sure Is there such a thing anymore? I thought so But it all feels the same now Crawling on the ground to catch the details Am I missing something in the large scale? Would you still tell me tell me If it would hurt me hurt me? Would you still tell me tell me If it would hurt me hurt me? Would that change your mind? Would you still tell me tell me If it would help me help me? Would you still tell me tell me If it would help me help me? Would you draw that line? Wanting makes it easy to be deceived Can't always depend on what you see You should leave it lying, leave it lying, leave it lying … Pull strength from the air, hold it there Push on every day, wake up and wait Answers that will not satisfy Tempted to believe in the lie See it shining Better to leave it lying

Just See You 03:25
Be still, listen Stay here, tell me What you hear I don't really know you though I try to Treat you like a puzzle, read the clues I can dig I won't unearth the purpose But I feel compelled to see it through And the road is rimmed with red I can't keep my eyes ahead Petals mesmerize And the white lines blind I just see you Eyes opened up wide Flooded with light or shut tight I just see you Been circling around Something profound I can't touch I just see you Clouds shift in the sky, materialize I just see you Eyes opened up wide Flooded with light or shut tight I just see you Know I should accept the circumstances Fight it 'cause it seems there should be answers Diligently adding up the sums Hoping I mixed up a place in one Petals mesmerize And the white lines blind Eyes opened up wide Flooded with light or shut tight I just see you Been circling around Something profound I can't touch I just see you Clouds shift in the sky, materialize I just see you …

People come wanting And needing belonging And hoping for someone To be there till morning Be you, I'll be me Beside you forever Like paper that's separate But folded together If you ask me, I can't give you an answer I knew nothing that could help me decide Then you say that my skin smells like roses Face so close that I can't tell where I end There are things we don't know Things we can't be told Have to learn, but it's slow Things we don't know Things we can't be told We have to learn You want to me to tell you how much I love you You should never have to wonder at all When I smile every day when I see you In my eyes any time that I see you

In eight years I have aged But you still look just the same Leathered skin, purpled hands Destined to die in this land Now you're here, be with me We won’t mind what we don't see We can share this one day Before you take off far away Time goes on and on and on And it leaves us all behind All our work, all our love Rolling into the grind But not you No not you You'll get to see the changes But in the company of strangers Run away, run away, run away and say That you're running towards another day Made my life, built my home Though I always wanted more To the stars, out of reach A gift you could have given me But you're here, be with me We won't mind what we don't see We can share this one day Before you take off far away You go on and on and on What do you think you'll find? One day the call will come for you And you'll live out your time Yeah you too Oh you too You'll get to see the changes But in the company of strangers Run away, run away, run away and say That you're running towards another day

about

Jumping on a little spark after a year of getting through it. Without the strange and surprising, chance encounters or unexpected situations, it turns out there was still plenty to mine. From all the thinking, watching, reading, listening, and mothering came songs about spies, tricksters, rootlessness, searching, truth, and motherhood.

Some of the inspirations: so much Ursula K. Le Guin, In & Of Itself, The Bureau, The Vanished Birds, When Stars Are Scattered, and a sweet but terrifying lullaby.

Thanks to David, Danny, K, and Elspeth.
